B Complex
The B vitamins are important factors in determining mood; deficiencies of any or all of these vitamins can produce significant symptoms relating to depression, anxiety, irritability, lethargy and fatigue. Many bipolars state that supplementation of B vitamins is extremely important to helping them to feel better. In general, B vitamins tend to work best together as a group; taking too much of any of them may result in deficiencies of others and, therefore, unwanted symptoms. B complex tends to be sold in B50 (50 mg of most of these vitamins, 50 mcg of a few, and 400 or 800 mcg of folic acid) or B100 (100 mg/mcg) dosages; bipolars may find relief with as little as 1 B50 or as many as 6 B100s per day. As with many other supplements, capsule form may be preferable although it is more expensive (some people say manic-depressives do not absorb this vitamin complex easily), and divided dosages also may be preferred. Although other factors (such as some medications) may interfere, a dark yellow-orange urine color may suggest that the individual is taking a sufficient quantity of this vitamin complex.

B Vitamins
The B vitamins work together & are vital to every function of your body.

The B vitamins are low in our modern diet. B vitamins are depleted by stress, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, sugar & certain medicines.

Dr. Slagle does not recommend anyone take a singular B vitamin without simultaneously taking a B complex as a foundational base. Single vitamin B supplements can induce deficiencies & imbalances of the other B vitamins.

Bach Flower Remedies
To those people who have heard of or used flower essence remedies the ones that probably most quickly come to mind are the 38 remedies discovered by the English physician, Edward Bach, M.B., B.S., D.P.H., in the early 1930s, and known throughout the world as Bach flower remedies. Interestingly, Dr. Bach's early research had to do with the role of bacteria in chronic disease, from which he turned to vaccine therapy, then to homeopathic remedies. His observation of his patients in all three fields led him to the recognition that physical illnesses are predisposed by negative emotional states such as fear, resentment, anger, insecurity, jealousy, etc. Two of his views worth quoting are: 'Think of the patient, not the disease" and "True healing involves treating the very base of the cause of suffering. Therefore no effort directed to the body alone can do more than superficially repair damage. Treat people for their emotional unhappiness, allow them to be happy, and they will become well." These ideas were heresy to the medical doctors of his time, but today clinical studies have confirmed that the emotional and psychological state of a person affects many body processes by suppressing or stimulating brain endorphin production, neurotransmitters, immune cell activity, adrenal hormones, etc.

One of the chief categories of the remedies put forth by Dr. Bach he called the "twelve healers." These remedies are for basic personality types that usually do not change in a given incarnation. The gifted user of Bach remedies, the late Jessica Bear, N.D., Ph.D., whom I had the pleasure of meeting at several conferences of the International Association of Specialized Kinesiologists, further subdivided these twelve remedies and their associated personalities as Dominators, Mediators, and Enablers. She ascribed to each personality type a specific virtue when the person was in balance, a fau1t or way of being when out of balance, and a reaction or way of behaving when not in balance. Dominators when out of balance look for someone they can dominate. Mediators out of balance seek to balance any difficult situation, usually between a Dominator and an Enabler. Enablers out of balance are easy victims. More often than not, my clients appear to be Enablers. Consider a client for whom Mimulus (Monkey flower, Mimulus guttatus) tests as the priority flower essence; that person tends to act as an Enabler and to react by fear, perhaps fearing such things as the dark, loud noises, poverty, being sick, being alone ("I'm a victim"), and it is hard for them to share their fears--they are often shy. Mimulus will help this client.

Mary Hyland has an intersting section of her website devoted to Bach Flower Remedies here .

Back Pain

Bacteria
The healthy colon should contain at least 85% lactobacillus and 15% coliform bacteria. However, the typical colon bacteria is the reverse, resulting in gas, bloating, pathogenic organisms, constipation, and malabsorption of nutirents--which leads to an overgrwoth of Candida.

Baker's Cyst
Cyst: Any closed cavity or sac that is lined by epithelium often contains liquid or semi-solid material.
Baker's Cyst: A synovial cyst or pouch that occurs in the synovial lining of the knee. Typically these cysts are not painful unless swelling is extensive. Aspiration of the cyst is therapeutic only temporarily since recurrence is common. Most disappear spontaneously after several years. Larger cysts can be removed surgically. In the absence of a specific trauma, usually caused by chronic bracing. The Baker's Cyst archives from the 'Ask Dr. Stoll' website are here .

Baldness
The loss of hair from parts of or the whole head. The most common cause of baldness in women and a VERY common cause of premature baldness in men is "chronic stress-effect storage in the hypothalamus" with scalp muscle bracing. If you get rid of that condition BEFORE the hair follicles die, all of the hair will come back.

Barberry
Also called “Oregon grape root? is derived from Mahonia Aquifolium, a small evergreen that grows wild on mountains in the Pacific Northwest. Early settlers first learned of the therapeutic use of Barberry from native American Indians who made a bitter brew from the yellow root (or rhizome) of this small shrub. Used in small doses, Barberry tonic was believed to be an effective treatment for heartburn, stomach upset, ulcers, and in specific amounts to stimulate appetite. Current herbal literature commonly recommends Barberry tinctures as a treatment for liver problems such as hepatitis and jaundice. It is also considered effective in lowering blood pressure, reducing heart rate and respiration, reducing bronchial constriction, and as a 'palliative' for menstrual irregularities. It is also used as a topical antiseptic. Researchers studying Barberry have determined that it does contains a number of physiologically active alkaloids, chief among them 'berberine', 'berbamine', and 'oxyacanthine'. Berberine has been found to exhibit some antibacterial activity, accounting for its traditional uses as an antiseptic when applied to the skin. Barbering is also known to possess sedative qualities, and can act to lower blood pressure and stimulate the uterus.

Barret's Esophagus
Barrett's esophagus is an important complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease, occurring in up to 10% of patients, and some of these individuals are at an increased risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma, which unless discovered in its early stages is associated with a poor prognosis.

Basal Cell Carcinomas
Squamous cell carcinomas are often somewhat less distinctive in their appearance than are basal cell carcinomas. They may or may not be ulcerated, and often have a hard, horny crust. They are not translucent appearing.

Unlike basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinomas have a significant risk of metastatic spread. Lesions larger than 1-2 cm in diameter are at higher risk for metastasis.

Basal cell carcinomas represent 75% of skin cancers

Bayberry
It's root bark contains antipyretic, antibiotic, and paramecicidal chemicals. Bayberry, an important nutritive supplement and digestive aid, helps insure that vital nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream. Bayberry root bark actually promotes healthy glandular activity throughout the entire body. Despite its widespread occurrence in North America, the Bayberry tree was used medicinally by just a few native American tribes. One group of Choctaws used it for fevers. Bayberry root bark also provides a stimulating tonic for the good of the whole body in this formulation.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
The prostate is a small gland that surrounds the neck of the bladder and urethra. Its major function is to contribute to seminal fluid. If the prostate enlarges or swells, it can put pressure on the urethra, acting a bit like a clamp—this condition is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Half of all fifty-year-old men have BPH. A man with BPH has to urinate more often and experiences less force and caliber while urinating, often dribbling. If the prostate enlarges too much, urination is difficult or impossible and the risk of urinary tract infection and kidney damage increases. The name “benign prostatic hyperplasia?has replaced the older term “benign prostatic hypertrophy? both terms refer to the same condition.

Drugs are available that can decrease urinary symptoms in about half of people with BPH, although it is not clear whether these drugs slow the progression of the condition. However, one of these drugs (finasteride) causes erectile dysfunction (impotence) in about five percent of men who take it. Doctors often recommend surgery when symptoms are severe or when there is a high risk of urinary obstruction. Although prostate surgery has a high success rate, it also has a higher rate of complications than drug therapy.

The prostate cells can be stimulated into unregulated growth by Dihydrotesterone (DHT) which is a breakdown product of testosterone, & by prolactin, a hormone which increases the production of DHT.

Bentonite
A medicinal powdered clay, scientific name of Aluminum Silicate, which is also known as montmorillonite, derives from deposits of weathered volcanic ash. It often contains substantial amounts of magnesium and a wide variety of rare trace minerals. It is one of the most effective natural intestinal detoxifying agents available and has been recognized as such for centuries by native peoples around the world. Whatever the name, liquid clay contains minerals that, once inside the gastrointestinal tract, are able to absorb toxins and deliver mineral nutrients to an impressive degree. Liquid clay is inert which means it passes through the body undigested.

Through its natural evolution, Bentonite also selectively adsorbs an interesting variety of organic material. A healing clay is distinguished primarily by the "secondary" sorpted materials which both a) maintain its natural characteristic to be precisely PH balanced ( basic ) for the human ( and animal ) biological system AND b) leave the clay with an incredibly dense molecular makeup which produces a self-generated negatively charged electromagnetic field upon hydration.

Technically, the clay first adsorbs toxins (heavy metals, free radicals, pesticides), attracting them to its extensive surface area where they adhere like flies to sticky paper; then it absorbs the toxins, taking them in the way a sponge mops up a kitchen counter mess.

There is an electrical aspect to bentonite’s ability to bind and absorb toxins. According to Yerba Prima, a company based in Ashland, Oregon, which markets Great Plains® Bentonite, the clay’s minerals are negatively charged while toxins tend to be positively charged; hence the clay’s attraction works like a magnet drawing metal shavings. But it’s even more involved than that.

Once hydrated (combined with water), bentonite has an enormous surface area. According to Yerba Prima, a single quart bottle can represent a total surface area of 960 square yards or 12 American football fields. Bentonite is made of a great number of tiny platelets, with negative electrical charges on their flat surfaces and positive charges on their edges.

When bentonite absorbs water and swells, it is stretched open like a highly porous sponge; the toxins are drawn into these spaces by electrical attraction and bound fast. In fact, according to the Canadian Journal of Microbiology (31 [1985], 50-53), bentonite can absorb pathogenic viruses, aflatoxin (a mold), and pesticides and herbicides including Paraquat and Roundup. The clay is eventually eliminated from the body with the toxins bound to its multiple surfaces.

In some cases, the "healing clay" classification is determined due to a very specialized sorption of minerals, such as naturally occuring calcium bentonite.

In other cases, the classification is due to specialized organic material that has been naturally incorporated into the clay. Much of this organized organic material remains unclassified by modern science. New species of fungus ( such as the fungus discovery responsible for the advent of penicillin ) have been discovered in natural clay. Botanicals that have long since vanished off the face of the earth often occur in small traces in a natural clay. It is an amazing mystery that such healing clays contain an endless variety of materials all of which have proven beneficial to the human body on the testing field of time.

A third classification provides for the lack of sorpted material. Some clays are prized for the purity which leave the clay virtually a simple crystal matrix. A pharmacy grade healing clay falls into this category, although in this case the means are achieved artificially. This classification also takes into consideration the particle sizes ( in microns ) of the clay particles, smaller being more beneficial.

The last classification has yet to be fully defined due to the difficulty of measuring certain quantum properties that recent scientific discoveries have uncovered.

Green healing clay is both an incredible mystery, AND a primary key to unlocking the secret to the origin of all biological life on Earth. Indeed, some scientists believe that bentonite was the primary catalyst in the formation of the first single celled organisms. Bentonite may very well have acted as a cell membrane, holding by sorption key amino acids and protein chains, allowing the first hint of life both the time and the space to take an evolutionary leap that eventually led to the development of complex organisms.

Eytons?Earth has an extensive site devoted to Bentonite Clay.

Benzene
A chemical solvent known to cause cancer. Dr. clark finds traces of Benzene in many cosmetics, cleaners, food etc.

From the EPA: Benzene is a known human carcinogen by all routes of exposure. This finding is supported by evidence from human epidemiologic studies, animal data, and an improvement in understanding of mechanism(s) of action. Human epidemiologic studies of highly exposed occupational cohorts have demonstrated that exposure to benzene can cause acute nonlymphocytic leukemia and other blood disorders, that is, preleukemia and aplastic anemia. Additionally, changes in blood and bone marrow consistent with hematotoxicity are recognized in humans and experimental animals.

Berberine
Berberine is an alkaloid found in Golden seal, Barberry, and Mountain grape. Berberine is anti-microbial, anti-cancer, and increases blood flow to the spleen.

It kills amoebas (is an amoebacide) and is used to treat cholera.

Studies have shown Berberine:

  • Exhibits broad antibacterial, antifungal, & antiprotozoal effects
  • Excellent for use with "travelers diarrhea" or acute diarrhea.
  • Has shown effectiveness with diarrhea secondary to cholera, giardiasis, & non-specific gastroenteritis.
  • Inhibits the growth of candida & other fungi without killing acidophilus, bifidus, & other beneficial gastrointestinal organisms.
  • Is helpful with infection of the mucous membranes i.e. mouth, throat, sinuses, bronchi, urinary & gastrointestinal tissue.
  • Has immune modulatory as well as its antibiotic, anti-infective effects.
  • Has anti-convulsant and sedative effects.
  • May be beneficial with cirrhosis.
  • Has blood pressure lowering effects.
  • May help with those ventricular heart irregularities caused by decreased blood supply to the heart.
  • Is used in China to treat white blood cell depression caused by chemotherapy/radiation treatments.

Beryllium
  • Year discovered: 1798
  • Atomic No.: 4
  • Symbol: Be
  • Atomic weight: 9.0122
  • Melting point: 1,278?C

Beryllium, which is derived from beryl, bertrandite and phenakite ores, exhibits both metallic and nonmetallic physical and mechanical properties. This gray in color, brittle metal is one of the lightest structural materials known. Still, it has a specific stiffness six times that of 1010 steel. Beryllium is also an excellent electrical and thermal conductor. In fact, beryllium and beryllium alloys are often the top-of-the-line material for "it has to work" electronic and aerospace equipment. Premium automobile air bags, for example, will often use pricey beryllium-copper alloys to ensure deployment. Nicolas Louis Vauquelin discovered the element in 1797 while examining an emerald, a form of beryl. It was first isolated in 1828.

Beta
A brainwave ranging from 14-20 Hertz when thinking.

Beta Blockers
A class of drugs. See acebutolol.

Beta-Carotene
This nutrient is one of the most important antioxidants and free radical 'hunters' which has been found to strengthen the immune system, destroy carcinogens (cancer-causing substances), guard against heart disease and stroke and lower cholesterol levels. The body converts Beta-Carotene to vitamin A, which is necessary for healthy skin and mucous membranes (the body's first line of defense against invading micro-organisms). Beta-Carotene is an orange plant pigment; 2 vitamin A molecules hooked tail to tail. While too much vitamin A can be toxic, beta carotene is non-toxic. The body stores carotene, and makes vitamin A from it only as it needs vitamin A.

Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique
(B.E.S.T.) - Developed by Dr. M.T. Morter, Jr., B.E.S.T. is a painless relaxation technique restoring a patient’s natural energy fields. Morter believes that emotional, mental and physical upsets change the course of energy flow which then leads to disease. Practitioners are trained by Dr. Morter and practice in many U.S. states and around the world. Shown to be effective for a range of problems including headaches, back pain, kidney and heart problems, emphysema and digestive trouble.

Bio-Spectrum
English equivalent of a Chinese phrase that refers to the spectrum of electro-magnetic waves generated by the human body. Chinese scientists have invented many devices, such as therapeutic lamps, that make use of bio-spectrum radiation.

Telstar Innovations imports and sells a range of Bio-Spectrum devices.

Bioenergetics
A combination of physical and psychological techniques designed to release blockages in the flow of energy through the body. Stems from the work of Wilhem Reich as refined by his pupil, psychiatrist Alexander Lowen. Once areas of repressed trauma are identified in the body, physical exercises, deep breathing and various forms of massage are used to permit the body to give up its need to "armor" itself. Especially effective for asthma, migraine and headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, sleep disorders and stress. Bioenergetic therapists are usually psychiatrists, psychologists or other professional practitioners who have specialized in Reichian therapy.

Biofeedback
Therapy which uses machines to measure and display body functions and states such as heart rate, skin temperature, muscle tention, and brain activity. The patient can monitor these functions, see how and why they change through stages of rest and activity. Eventually the patient will learn to control those functions. Pioneered in the 1960s, biofeedback allows the patient to monitor and improve their level of relaxation by observing a machine that keeps track of heart rate, body temperature, muscle tension, skin conductivity and brainwaves. The ultimate goal is to self-induce relaxation and to recognize the body’s distress signals.

Bioflavonoids
Are vital in their ability to increase the strength of the capillaries (blood vessels) and to regulate their permeability. They assist Vitamin C in keeping collagen, the intercellular "cement" in healthy condition; are essential for the proper absorption and use of vitamin C; prevents Vitamin C from being destroyed in the body by oxidation; beneficial in hypertension; helps hemorrhages and ruptures in the capillaries and connective tissues and builds a protective barrier against infections. Quercetin is a very highly concentrated form of Bioflavonoids derived from citrus fruit.

Biological Dentistry
In use for the past 25 years in Germany, Biological Dentistry recognizes that dental toxins and hidden dental infections can have an impact on overall health. It has been estimated by European researchers that as much as half of all chronic degenerative illness can be traced to dental problems and traditional dental treatment techniques. Unlike the traditional approach, biological dentistry treats the teeth, jaw and related structures with the assumption that treatment can affect the entire body.

Biological Medicine
Biological medicine is simply the treatment of chronic conditions (like Arthritis) by utilizing proper nutrition and adjusting living habits. This may sound like an oversimplification but living in a high tech fast food world has changed the molecular condition of our cells to a degree that it is no wonder why the percentage of chronic conditions has risen greatly over the last century.

Biological Terrain
The biochemistry or “environment?of the fluids in which your cells live is known as your Biological Terrain. It is described by three factors, acidity, electrical conductivity, and antioxidant power. The foods people eat in our modern societies, high in fat and sugar, along with air and water pollution, tend to cause our Biological Terrain to be unhealthy. This encourages oxidation, tissue damage, aging, and the growth of disease organisms. Negatively charged Hydrogen ions tend to improve the chemical condition of your body fluids into a healthier Biological Terrain.

Biotin
Biotin is a water soluble vitamin which can be depleted by stress. It is essential in the conversion of carbohydrates to energy & plays a major role in fat & protein metabolism for building healthy tissue.

Biotin works synergistically with insulin to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics especially at higher doses of 10-20 mg.

Biotin is involved in multiple biochemical reactions in your body as an enzymatic cofactor & works synergistically with some of the B complex vitamins & zinc.

Biotin needs are increased with:

  • Toxic or irritable bowel conditions.
  • Gastrointestinal malabsorption.
  • With antibiotics or antacids which upset the normal intestinal microbes.
  • With pregnancy & lactation.
  • Advancing age.
  • Stress.
  • Carbohydrate tolerance problems.
  • Periods involving extensive tissue repair.

May be useful for:

  • Skin & hair disorders.
  • Neurological disorders in kidney failure.
  • As a supportive element in B12 & folic acid deficiency.
  • Used to reduce the effect of stressors in those with adrenal insufficiency.
  • Certain immunodeficiencies such as chronic candidiasis & cellular immune defects.

SYMPTOMS OF DEFICIENCY :

  • Depression
  • Lassitude & sleepiness
  • Anxiety
  • Hair loss
  • Scaly dermatitis
  • Seborrheic dermatitis in infants
  • Dry skin
  • Premature skin aging
  • Grayish skin color
  • Depigmentation of skin & hair
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Pale smooth tongue
  • Appetite loss/nausea
  • Muscular pain
  • Muscle weakness & atrophy
  • Reduced muscle tone & mental alertness in children, plus slowed growth
  • Chest pain
  • Slight anemia
  • Hallucinations
  • Decreased blood sugar control in diabetes
  • Increased cholesterol

Bipolar Depression
Most doctors who treat patients suffering from bipolar depression, as well as the patients themselves, would probably agree that it is a condition that is challenging to treat in a fully effective manner. Although an increasing number of pharmaceutical compounds to address depressions and to stabilize moods are becoming available, these are not always fully satisfactory for many patients. Many bipolars, for example, find that medications that are available can lead to significant side effects, and therefore find themselves having to choose between living with these unpleasant effects or discontinuing medications (or decreasing dosages) and somehow learning to manage despite severe mood swings. Others find that despite an exhaustive trial-and-error process involving different combinations of drugs, their mood swings continue to present major problems for them. Finally, many bipolar women who want to have children face the option of either undergoing extremely difficult mood swings while pregnant or taking a risk that their children will suffer birth defects, since all of the available mood stabilizers are known or suspected to be harmful to developing fetuses in human populations.

Some alternative methods look for alternate explanations for what psychiatrists may have labeled as manic-depression. For example, food allergies may cause severe mood swings in some people, and untreated endocrine problems of all sorts are widely recognized as causing mood difficulties.

With a few exceptions, most of the alternative methods tend to address depressions or the short-term mood fluctuations suffered by "rapid-cyclers" (and generally treated by most knowledgeable doctors with anticonvulsants) rather than the more "classic," longer-term highs and lows that are usually treated with lithium. Many alternative practitioners, in fact, state that despite their best efforts, lithium is still a necessity for some patients, although they may tend to attempt to minimize the necessary dosage through a variety of other means. Most alternative practitioners, however, seem to believe that the need for the long-term use of antidepressants by bipolar or unipolar depressives can usually be eliminated through the use of alternative treatments, although it may take a substantial amount of work before this can be accomplished. The use of anti-convulsants such as Depakote and Tegretol seems to fall somewhere in the middle of the two extremes: although the use of alternative methods may help many patients to taper off of these medications, some need to continue to use at least small dosages in order to remain stable. (It should be noted that since most antidepressants increase rapid-cycling in many patients, the elimination of the antidepressants may make these drugs less necessary.) In many cases, however, decreasing the dosage of anti-manic agents is almost as desirable as eliminating the need for medications entirely, since side effects tend to be substantially less at smaller dosages for most patients.

Birch Bark
Considered both a bitter and an astringent. A leaf tea made by infusion is said to eliminate gravel and dissolve kidney stones when taken daily for a time. This herb has also been used successfully as a cream, salve, wash or bath additive for the treatment of skin problems, including Melanoma, resulting from the action of the betulinic acid occurring naturally in the bark of the tree. Also, the inner bark contains an oil which is sometimes substituted for wintergreen in various over-the-counter (OTC) skin liniments.

Bismuth
  • Year discovered: 1450
  • Atomic No.: 83
  • Symbol: Bi
  • Atomic weight: 208.98
  • Melting point: 271.3?C

Heavy, soft, brittle and silvery white in color, bismuth may be one of the most environmentally safe metals around. Although it is a heavy metal, bismuth is nontoxic and noncarcinogenic. Demand for the material as a replacement for lead has grown in recent years, and it is already popular as a remedy for stomach ailments. Bismuth is rarely found in its native state. With but one exception it is mined as a by-product of lead, tin, copper, tungsten, silver and gold ores.

Birth Defects
[Michelle A. Johnson, ND]

Another major problem that is becoming associated with aspartame consumption, according to Dr. Roberts, is the high potential for birth defects in children conceived while the mother has been consuming aspartame. A breakdown product of aspartame metabolism, phenylalanine, concentrates in the placenta, causing mental retardation in the baby.

Read Dr. Johnson's article ASPARTAME: Sweet and Deadly.

Black Cohosh
Has been shown in recent European studies to have several actions on the various symptoms associated with menopause. Certain complex chemicals, especially triterpenes and flavonoids, are believed to be the active constituents. Some of them act on the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain, to suppress the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH). High levels of LH in the blood are often associated with menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, heart palpitations, and drying & thinning of the vagina. In contrast to standard hormonal therapy with estrogens and progestins, however, Black Cohosh does not seem to affect levels of two other pituitary hormones, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin. In other words, the action is more selective than with normal hormonal therapy. That's good, because it tends to lessen side effects. Other constituents in Black Cohosh bind to estrogen receptors, producing a weak estriol-like effect. Estriol, unlike its more potent cousin estradiol, is not associated with increased risk of breast, ovarian or endometrial cancers. Still other constituents in this plant seem to promote mild relaxation. Black Cohosh also has a tonic action on the heart and circulation. It has been experimentally proven to reduce hypertension. The plant exhibits a variety of other physiological properties that are only vaguely related to each other.

Blessed Thistle
Is a plant found primarily in Asia and Europe. Blessed Thistle is also referred to as 'St. Benedict Thistle' and 'Holy Thistle', names that reflect the fact that Blessed Thistle was a popular folk remedy and tonic appreciated by monastic monks in the Middle ages. Blessed Thistle should not be confused with 'Milk Thistle' (also known as Marian, St. Mary's, or Our Lady's Thistle). In Europe, Blessed Thistle is regarded as an excellent appetite stimulant, and is used in the manufacture of “bitters?to be taken before meals to stimulate stomach and intestinal activity, and aid in digestion and circulation. It is also used in the treatment of constipation and flatulence, and is considered an excellent heart tonic and blood purifier. The flowers of the Blessed Thistle are commonly brewed to make a slightly bitter, and sweet, tea that has a mild diuretic activity. Blessed Thistle tea is used by contemporary herbalists for the treatment of a variety of liver problems, such as jaundice and hepatitis. Because painful menstruation can involve the liver, Blessed Thistle is a common component of herbal formulas used to relieve menstrual symptoms.

Blood
Blood is life itself. It is the primal force that fuels the power and mystery of birth, the horrors of disease, war, and violent death. Entire civilizations have been built on blood ties. Tribes, clans, and monarchies depend on them. We cannot exist without blood--literally or figuratively.

Blood is magical. Blood is mystical. Blood is alchemical. It appears throughout human history as a profound religious and cultural symbol. Ancient peoples mixed it together and drank it to denote unity and fealty. From the earliest times, hunters performed rituals to appease the spirits of the animals they killed by offering up the animal blood and smearing it on their faces and bodies. The blood of the lamb was placed as a mark on the hovels of the enslaved Jews of Egypt so that the Angel of Death would pass over them. Moses is said to have turned the waters of Egypt to blood in his quest to free his people. The symbolic blood of Jesus Christ has been, for nearly two thousand years, central to the most sacred rite of Christianity.

Blood cholesterol

Blood pH
Dr. Watson and Wiley found that blood PLASMA pH seems to be a barometer of metabolic health. They found that blood plasma pH for EVERYONE seems to be optimized at or around 7.46

They realized that the RATE of metabolic action (the creation of energy by burning food) resulted in changes in blood gases (like CO2). Whenever you burn ANYTHING in the presence of oxygen, you get water and carbon dioxide (CO2) and of course a release of energy.

A specialized pH meter (that costs about $500) is needed to accurately measure blood PLASMA pH. The measurement must be taken within a few minutes of the blood draw to get an accurate result. This precludes sending the sample out. I've never seen a physician's office with the right equipment.

Blood Sugar
Feeling great and having lots of energy throughout the day means being able to properly and efficiently metabolize food. More specifically, it involves the break down of sugar into usable energy. The body’s ability to regulate levels of sugar in the blood is also important to overall health, weight control, and moods.

The natural hormone in the body which controls blood sugar levels is insulin. Insulin depends on the presence of the mineral chromium in order to function. Other nutrients which activate enzymes involved in sugar and carbohydrate metabolism are zinc, magnesium, manganese, vanadium, alpha-lipoic acid and vitamin B6.

Boil
A boil, also known as a furuncle, is an acute staphylococcal infection of a hair follicle. It begins as an tender red nodule and enlarges to a pustule. A single boil should be treated with intermittent application of moist heat to allow it to open and drain spontaneously.

Hot, moist compresses (a folded wash cloth with a trace of antibacterial soap on it -- Phase III, Safeguard, Dial, P-300, etc.) for 5 minutes every hour -- at the first sign of a new boil -- will usually reverse the process within a day or so and avoid most of the problem. You need to keep the heat at the point of its being uncomfortable (not enough to burn yourself) to get the job done in the 5 minutes. Every hour is best if you can do it. At least 4 times a day for sufficient results.

Bone Marrow
Your bone marrow's primary function is to create blood cells.

Boneset
In Pennsylvania, U.S.A., it was, and for many still is, Boneset, scientifically called Eupatorium perfoliatum[2]. Although it is now rarely prescribed by physicians, Boneset was the most commonly used medicinal plant of eastern United States. Most farmsteads had a bundle of dried Boneset in the attic or woodshed from which a most bitter tea would be meted out to the unfortunate victim of a cold or fever. Having lived in that section of the country we qualified many times for this particular drink. The Flu of 1918 stands out very forcefully in that the Klenners survived when scores about us were dying. Although bitter it was curative and most of the time the cure was overnight. Several years ago my curiosity led me to assay this "herbal medicine" and to my surprise and delight I found that we had been taking from ten to thirty grams of natural vitamin C at one time. Even then it was given by body weight. Children one cupful; adults two to three cupfuls. Cups those days held eight ounces. Twentieth century man seemingly forgets that his ancestors made crude. drugs from various plants and roots, and that these decoctions, infusions, juices, powders, pills and ointments served his purpose. Elegant pharmacy has only made the forms and shapes more acceptable.

Borage
Borage tea was given to competitor in tournaments of medieval times as a moral booster. “I, borage bring always courage? was a popular rhyme of the day. Borage is an annual plant that grows wild in the Mediterranean countries. The hollow, bristly, branched stem grows up to 2 feet tall. Borage has been used for various medicinal purposes over the years as an aperient, diaphoretic, febrifuge, galactagogue, pectoral, and tonic. Borage is good for reducing fever and for restoring vitality during convalescence from illness. Its diaphoretic action is also credited with some antidotal effect against several poisons. This herb also exhibits some calmative properties that make it useful for nervous conditions. Borage has also been recommended for pleurisy and peritonitis for its calmative and anti-inflammatory action.

Borage Seed Oil
To prevent atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), high blood pressure, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), heart disease and multiple sclerosis, an important fatty acid called gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is essential. Borage seed oil naturally contains high amounts of GLA, which may also be helpful in reducing pain and inflammation, lowering cholesterol, and benefiting the liver.

Effective for sprains and strains resulting from sports activity, back pain, neck pain and virtually any pain of musculoskeletal origin, acute or chronic.

BPE®
One of Dr. Chrostopher's herbal formulas.

Blood circulation combination: Cayenne, Ginger, Golden Seal, Ginseng, Parsley and Garlic.

This group of herbs feed cayenne (a stimulant) and ginger (stimulant) into the circulatory system where the cayenne works from the bloodstream to the heart and arteries and out into the veins. The other herbs in this formula assist these two herbs and work together to equalize the blood pressure (whether high or low) to bring it to a good systolic over the diastolic reading. This formula is given to assist blood purifying teas to work more efficiently and to also aid the clearing up of allergies, etc.

To speed up the healing process after an injury it is very good to see that the blood stream is flowing properly to carry food to the cells and to carry off the toxins and waste material. The blood circulation combination [BPE] will do this job effectively.

Bracing
Constant, chronic, muscle tension that is below the level of conscious awareness, limiting blood supply to important parts of the body.

A condition of unconscious muscle tension caused by severe, and overwhelming, stress-effect storage in the hypothalamus (the part of the brain where the interface between the environment, and body/mind function, is located)--commonly called the "fight or flight" effect.

Bracing and the effect on joints: When any muscle contracts, the opposing muscle for that joint is supposed to relax completely by reflex action. If it does not (the definition of "bracing": when all muscles stay contracted to a certain extent 24 hours a day, even when asleep) the muscles work against each other and grind the joint surfaces together harder than normal and aggravate the wear and tear of the joint surfaces. At the same time, the pressure in the Synovial fluid is greatly increased, leading to arthritis and Baker's Cysts.

Imagine that you are watching a Stephen King movie, riding the scariest roller coaster in the world, a phone call in the middle of the night, an intruder breaking into your home. OK, so what is your physical response to those events? How does your body feel? Your heart starts beating faster than normal, your breathing might become more rapid, your palms might sweat, your muscles tense - to name a few of the things that might happen to your body. Now imagine that you spend your days and nights in that state of "uptightness". That would be chronic bracing.

On bracing and shoulders So many people seem to be having so much trouble connecting to what is meant by "bracing" I thought, perhaps a personal experience might do the trick. If you CAN "drop your shoulders", to the extent that you can, you are "holding them up". Why are you doing that? This is a direct measurement of how much fight or flight readiness you are holding in your hypothalamus. Your shoulders are designed to hang from your shoulder girdle and they should not be "hiked up" at all. NOW, a second measure of how "ready" you are is how long it takes for you to "rehike" your shoulders. Can you drop your shoulders now? It Didn't take very long for that shoulder tension to return, did it? This chronic muscle tension is "bracing" and the majority of people in this country do it 24 hours a day. This changes completely, how the hypothalamus runs the entire bodymind and is a major cause of many of the chronic conditions in this country today.

Brain
Many people simply accept the idea of declining memory and mental ability as a natural part of the aging process. However, current research disagrees with this notion, and has discovered several biochemical substances which play key roles in improving mental ability and brain activity.

All of our thoughts and actions rely on the transmission of nerve impulses between different parts of the brain, and between the brain and the rest of the body. These are electrochemical impulses, triggered by substances called neurotransmitters, that travel along nerve cells and fibers. This process requires that the brain have enough blood and oxygen, and that certain nutrients are present. A variety of nutrients which are essential to the proper functioning of the brain and nervous system include: B vitamins, magnesium, and phosphatidyl serine.

[Dr. Schulze]

One of the things that enlightened me on this was, when I was first studying, I had an opportunity to be involved in a couple of autopsies and dissections of human bodies.

When I first saw a skull cut off and a brain opened up, it was a great awareness for me, because up until then I had thought of our brain as being something out of Star Trek - a gaseous, cloudy area where all our thinking takes place.

But when you see a brain sitting on a stainless steel plate, all the mysterious feelings that you have go away and you see that it's just an organ.

It's like a kidney, it's like a lung, it's like anything else. Even though it may be the center for our central nervous system and our thoughts, if it doesn't get good blood supply, and that blood going to the brain isn't quality blood, the brain isn't going to work.

The same way that you have a liver that became congested with cholesterol, a gall bladder with gallstones, or a kidney with kidneystones, you can get brains that actually have congestion, mucous, and pus.

I've asked the family to send me the autopsy report. It will say they opened up the brain (if a patient had depression or dementia) and they will explain that the brain cavity was filled with translucent liquids - white and yellow liquids - and waste materials.

They don't basically tell you what it is, but they say that there was a lot of waste material in and around the brain (pus, mucous, and congestion) because the blood wasn't getting to that brain to supply it with nutrition. It also wasn't taking the waste material out of that brain.

These reports also stated that the actual brain tissue has degenerated, dissolved and been destroyed.

Our thought processes create a lot of waste in the brain - and that waste has to be removed.

Brain Fatigue
Resetting Your Brains Sodium/Potassium Ratio In Theta. Your brain cells reset their sodium and potassium ratios when the brain is in Theta state. The sodium and potassium levels are involved in osmosis which is the chemical process that transports chemicals into and out of your brain cells. After an extended period in the Beta state, the ratio between potassium and sodium is out of balance. This the main cause of what is known as "mental fatigue". A brief period in Theta (about 5 - 15 min) can restore the ratio to normal, resulting in mental refreshment.

Brain Fog
Food sensitivities and Leaky Gut syndrome are implicated in many cases of brain fog.

Brainwave Entrainment
Several scientists had noticed the effect of pulsating light and sound stimuli on brainwave patterns as early as 1910. But it wasn't until the early 1970's that neuroscientists confirmed that with the use of sound it is possible to stimulate the brain to move to or through any of the four main brainwave states.

In 1973, Dr. Gerald Oster of Mt. Sinai Medical Center published a paper called "Auditory Beats in the Brain" identifying a characteristic of the brain in which the brain would resonate to the frequency difference between two tones presented to opposite ears. Because the hemispheres are not entirely separate, but connected, they actually respond to these two tones by producing a third tone representing the difference between the two original tones. Here's an example:

Tone of 230 Hz played to right ear Tone of 240 Hz played to left ear Difference = 10 Hz. (Alpha State)

So by using the above two tones, a calm alpha brainwave state can be created for the listener. This same process -- called Brainwave Entrainment - can be used to create virtually any brainwave pattern desired. Today, this technique is used as a means of achieving meditative states in personal growth, treatment therapies for learning disabilities like dyslexia and attention deficit, and many other approaches to improving mental functioning and enhancing well-being.

Generally speaking, the lower the carrier freqencies, the greater the fluctuations created in the brain. These fluctuations, over time, can create major upward shifts in personal development.

Here's an example of how lower carrier frequencies are used in brainwave growth. In the example given earlier, we saw an alpha state created with the following carrier frequencies:

230 Hz and 240 Hz This pair of carrier frequencies gives us a 10 Hz alpha brainwave pattern. But how could we make this 10 Hz alpha state stronger? The answer is by lowering the pair of carrier frequencies:

190 Hz and 180 Hz

Or even lower...

92 Hz and 82 Hz

As long as the difference between the two carriers is 10, we still have a 10 Hz alpha state. But by using these lower carriers, we have created a stronger version of that alpha state; a version which saturates the nervous system with stimulus which, in turn, produces improved functioning.

Brainwaves
The human brain operates neuro-electrically. Brain activity appears as a series of micro-voltage firings between neurons (brain cells), or more precisely, through networks of neurons. With the use of an electroencephalograph machine (EEG) these firings or pulses can be detected and measured. These neuro-electrical impulses are categorized in terms of a frequency range of four major brainwave patterns (Hz = Hertz = cycles/pulses per second):
  • Beta (13-30+Hz): Beta is the state of normal, wakeful consciousness. As we are working, driving, talking, etc., we are likely in Beta. On the higher extremes, Beta is sometimes associated with anxiety, panic or stress.
  • Alpha (8-12.9 Hz): Alpha is a state of light relaxation. Not a sleep state, but usually reflective of a calm, focused mind. Alpha is sometimes called the "superlearning state" because the brain seems to be more receptive and open to new information. Alpha is also considered ideal for creative brain storming. Most meditation occurs in this state.
  • Theta (4-7.9 Hz): Theta is a state of deep relaxation. Sometimes a sleep state, sometimes not, theta reflects a state of dreamlike awareness. Dreams and a deep, meditative state of consciousness are common characteristics of theta.
  • Delta (0.1-3.9 Hz): Delta, the deepest of the brainwave patterns, is a state of deep sleep, or trance-like consciousness. Maintaining awareness into delta can result in opening access to the unconscious portion of our consciousness.
In the course of an average day, most of us spend some amount of time in all of these states of consciousness.

As you go from the higher frequency beta pattern, down through alpha, through theta, and into delta, the electrical fluctuations in the brain increase. Coupled with the creation of these increased fluctuations in such a way that they occur in a synchronous manner throughout the brain the brain is pushed to create new neural pathways, changing patterns of perception and information transfer in the brain, thereby creating new ways of experiencing yourself and your world. This same process happens in traditional meditation, which creates the same electric fluctuations through a process of focusing, whether on a mantra, the breath, a prayer, or some other point of focus.

Breast Feeding
When a baby is born, the intestines are virtually strerile, free of microorganisms. Immediately, something like a wild west land grab ensues and friendly and unfriendly bacteria alike vie for territory and dominance.

Between the fourth and seventh day among breast-fed babies, bifidobacteria normally outdo the rest of the field. Researchers now realize that one of the chief reasons breast-fed babies get markedly fewer infections than formula-fed ones is that mothers milk tends to promote superior growth of bifidobacteria in the GI tract. These microorganisms, in turn, produce essential byproducts in the intestines, which act as a barrier to the growth of dangerous pathogenic microbes that cause infection and disease.

Breema Bodywork
Breema restores vitality at an energetic level through either standardized sets of movements done on oneself, or through treatments given by a practitioner. Based on bodywork techniques from a small Kurdish village, this work was introduced to Westerners by Manocher Movlai, a native of the village of Breemava. The names of Breema treatments—and the physical movements they involve—frequently reflect and express a connection to earth and nature: "Grinding the Wheat," "Underground Water," "Dancing on the Grapes."

Bromelain
Helps to inhibit pro-inflammatory compounds, similar to non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs reducing swelling & pain without side effects. And unlike aspirin, bromelain doesn't inhibit the production of prostaglandins which can have undesirable side effects. One study of 700 patients - mostly firemen with injuries - the group taking the bromelain reported good or excellent results, healing in half the time as the non-bromelain group. Other trials with oral bromelain over a thirteen month period showed a good response in over 70% of the patients. It:
  • Inhibits the formation of the inflammation-causing chemicals (prostaglandins E2 & kinins.)
  • Reduces the pain & swelling of sports or other traumatic injuries or surgery.
  • Accelerates the healing process, allowing a quicker return to functioning.
  • Has shown usefulness in chronic & acute sinusitis, osteoarthritis & rheumatoid arthritis sciatica, bursitis, tendinitis, muscle pulls, scleroderma.
  • Relaxes the vasoconstriction of arteries.
  • Has blood clot dissolving properties & inhibits platelet clumping which makes it useful for angina, thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, & varicose veins.
  • May potentiate antibiotics & chemotherapy agents by improving absorption & tissue penetration.
  • Helps with symptoms of indigestion.

Bronchitis
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the trachea and bronchial tree. Bronchitis can be either acute or chronic. Acute bronchitis may be caused by viral or bacterial infections and is often preceded by an upper respiratory tract infection. In addition, acute bronchitis can result from irritation of the mucous membranes by environmental fumes, acids, solvents, or tobacco smoke. Bronchitis usually begins with a dry, non-productive cough. After a few hours or days, the cough may become more frequent and produce mucus. A secondary bacterial infection may occur, in which the sputum (bronchial secretions) may contain pus. People whose cough and/or fever continues for more than seven days should visit a medical practitioner.

Chronic bronchitis may result from prolonged exposure to bronchial irritants. Cigarette smoking, environmental toxins, and inhalant allergens can all cause chronic irritation of the bronchi. The cells lining the bronchi produce excess mucus in response to the chronic irritation; this excess mucus production can lead to a chronic, productive cough. Allergies can also cause bronchitis.

Bronchitis can be particularly dangerous in the elderly and in people with compromised immune systems. These individuals should see a doctor if they develop a respiratory infection.

[Dr.Christopher]

For irritations of the respiratory tract, lungs, and bronchials, the Resp Free formula can be used: comfrey root (Symphytum officinale), mullein (Verbascum thapsus), chickweed (Stellaria media), marshmallow root (Althea officinalis), and lobelia (Lobelia inflata). Emphysema, bronchitis, asthma and tuberculosis sufferers have been helped by using this formula either as a tea (three cups a day), or in capsules (two or three capsules or tablets three times a day with a cup of comfrey tea). Three to six drops of tincture of lobelia may be added to the tea for additional aid.

Buchu Leaf
Is a urinary disinfectant, one of the important secondary considerations when treating prostate problems. By themselves, Buchu leaves are seldom used for acute prostate problems, but they lend just the right antiseptic property to preparations used for acute as well as chronic prostate problems. South Buchu works because its volatile oil stimulates urination and is excreted virtually unchanged by the kidneys, rendering the urine slightly antiseptic. Proprietary drugs are available in both South Africa and the United States that still employ Buchu leaves as a urinary antiseptic.

Has a long history as a cancer treatment, and has also been used extensively as a diuretic and a purgative. It's use as a cancer treatment, as it turns out, has some basis in fact, however the jury's still out on it's effectiveness, there is some evidence that it may work. “Buckthorn has shown some anti-tumor action,?says James A. Duke, Ph. D., a botanist retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and author of “The CRC Handbook of Medicinal Herbs?....”it deserves more research.?Buckthorn is still a long way from being an accepted cancer treatment, but if you're receiving standard cancer therapy, or if you're a heavy tobacco user, you may want to consider its inclusion as a supplement for immunity system support.

Budwig, Dr. Johanna
Dr. Budwig found herself in the midst of conflict. The head of the institute where she worked (who was reverentially nicknamed the 'pope of fats and oils' by his contemporaries) held patents for hydrogenation processes that produce the toxic polymers she claims to have found in tumors, and had financial interests in margarine. One can only speculate that he feared that Budwig would destroy margarine sales, his profits, and his reputation. She claims that he tried to bribe her with an offer of money and ownership of a drug store if she promised not to further publicize her findings. Refusing his bribe, she says he threatened her, then denied her access to laboratory facilities. When she tried to find another institute in which to continue her research, she says she found her way blocked by an industry-wide conspiracy against her, and she could neither continue her research nor publish her discoveries in research journals, after being excommunicated by the 'pope of fats and oils'. She copyrighted her work and published it in the form of a book.

It is difficult to judge from 40 years ago how much of this story is true. She insists that she should have been awarded a Nobel prize for her work, but was deprived of the recognition due her by the margarine politics that she claims dominates the Nobel Committee. She says the margarine industry tried to destroy her legally and financially.

Dr. Budwig began a consultation practice, to apply her ideas and methods to cancer cases doctors had given up as hopeless. She recommends against surgery, radiation, or drugs. She says that one must choose between toxic and natural treatments, and that one should not expect good results from combining them. Her treatments are strictly nutritional. They use a lot of flax oil and dairy protein. The diet she strictly imposes on patients includes plenty of carrot juice, fresh greens, whole grains (especially buckwheat), flax oil, skim milk protein, nuts, and a few herbs. She recommends rainbow trout because of its high content of w3 fatty acids. She refuses to use supplements, on principle.

She considers her protocol to be a return to the way we should have been eating in order not to get sick in the first place. Once sick, a return to her way of eating supplies the materials needed for repair and rebuilding.

Dr. Budwig claims to have successfully treated cancer (colon, brain, lung, stomach, breast, lymph, liver, melanoma, and leukemia), cardiovascular disease, diabetes, acne and other skin conditions, weak vision and hearing, constipation, sterility, dry skin, menstrual problems (cramps, foul odors, breast pain), glandular atrophy, fatty liver and other liver complaints, gallstones, pancreatic malfunction, kidney degeneration, blood disorders, anoxia, arthritic conditions, childhood diseases such as mumps, measles, and swollen tonsils, immune deficiency, and low vitality.

Burdock Root
(Arctium lappa) Is your all around blood purifier, its action being simple, yet profound. It produces gradual beneficial changes within the body by improving general nutrition and by gradually altering the health of the blood. It is both a diuretic (increases the secretion and flow of urine) and a diaphoretic (induces perspiration). Burdock has also been shown to enhance liver and bile functions. Bacteriostatic principles have been isolated from Burdock root, and it has been found to inhibit tumor growth. Documented effects include treatment of scurvy, venereal eruptions, leprosy, and other cankerous skin conditions.

Extensive burns or burns causing more than minor discomfort should be treated by a healthcare professional. For superficial burns caused by temperature (picking up a hot object, for example), natural medicine may be helpful after the burn is cleaned with soap and cold water and gently dried.

Bursitis
Bursitis is an inflammation of fluid-filled sacs (bursa) that the body situates in places where movement would otherwise cause friction. The most common bursa to become inflamed is in the shoulder. The cause of bursitis is mostly unknown, but trauma or arthritis may be involved.

Bursitis is occasionally accompanied by a calcific deposit in the underlying supraspinatus tendon, the most common site is the subdeltoid bursa. Walt recommends rest and gentle stretching exercises.
