Zinc
  • Year discovered: 1374
  • Atomic No.: 30
  • Symbol: Zn
  • Atomic weight: 65.38
  • Melting point: 419.38?C

Zinc's most remarkable quality is its natural capacity to protect. It is a bluish-gray metal that ranks fourth in consumption behind iron, aluminum and copper. It is mined from ores found in many locations, of which Canada, Australia, China and South America are the most significant sources. Zinc ore bodies often contain its sister metal, lead, but zinc can also be found with deposits of copper, silver and cadmium. Zinc-coated steel protects buildings, cars and structures of every kind from corrosion. Zinc also plays a role inside the human body as a vital trace element essential for digestion, reproduction and kidney function. Over 200 enzymes in the human body are known to need zinc. It is also noted for its ability to blend with other metals and is often used as an alloying agent.

The effects of zinc are so dramatic that some people have gone as far as to call it "the cure for the common cold". Research has supported the claims that zinc really can fight colds.

Zinc is a cofactor for many enzymes required for healing damaged skin.

Helps to reduce the prolactin levels in your body & thus secondarily inhibits DHT. Prostate enlargement is a common symptom of zinc deficiency & zinc deficiency is common among American men. Zinc may also play a role in the prevention of prostate cancer.

Zinc Glutonate
Is a special well-absorbed form of zinc.

Zinc Lozenges
For the past 10+ years research has indicated that the average length of a "cold" can be cut in half by using zinc lozenges. Since then, they have been available in health food stores and drugstores. A large study in 1996 has substantiated previous research. If this were advertised 1/10th as much as those medications designed only to relieve symptoms, there would be a lot less need for symptomatic medications.

Zirconium
  • Year discovered: 1789
  • Atomic No.: 40
  • Symbol: Zr
  • Atomic weight: 91.22
  • Melting point: 1,852?C

Zirconium is a lustrous, grayish-white, strong and hard metallic element obtained primarily from the mineral zircon, or zirconium silicate. Zircon is a by-product of the mining and processing of heavy-mineral sands for the titanium minerals, ilmenite and rutile. Zirconium was first made into high-purity metal in 1925 by the deBoer-van Arkel method, 101 years after it was initially prepared in elemental form. It is chiefly used in refractory bricks or blocks and in the glazes and colors for ceramic products. In pottery glazes, stabilized zirconium oxide serves as an opacifier and pigment. The facings of foundry molds also use zircon, which resists metal penetration and results in a uniform finish on the castings produced in the molds. Another significant application is the cladding for fuel rods in nuclear reactors. Yttria-stabilized zirconia is employed in some automotive and furnace sensors to help control combustion.
